Birding Unmasked

Birding Unmasked is a community birding group for autistic adults in the Omaha area.

It started with the observation that birding might be one of the most autistic-friendly hobbies ever invented. It’s an activity where deep knowledge is celebrated. Nobody will think you’re strange for knowing too much about the birds we all love. Pattern recognition and attention to detail are valuable skills. In fact, many excellent birders are autistic. And perhaps that’s not a coincidence.

The social side fits too. It’s standing quietly next to other people, all facing the same direction, looking at a bird. Together, but each in your own way. No eye contact expected. No small talk required. Quiet isn’t just accepted in birding, it’s what draws the birds closer.

That’s what Birding Unmasked is built around. It’s designed for autistic adults from the ground up, so quiet, routine, deep focus, and doing things your own way aren’t accommodations—they’re just how the group works. You can be yourself here. That’s the whole idea.

Meetings follow a predictable structure, published in advance. You’ll always know where we’re going, what we’re doing, and when it ends. Participation is always optional, at every level: come when you can, engage how you want, leave when you’re ready. The birds carry the conversation. Nobody will ask you to share, perform, or explain yourself.

We’re not a therapy group, and we’re not a program about autism. We’re a birding group. What we do is learn Nebraska’s birds: who they are, where they are, and what they’re doing.

Birding Unmasked is led by Jennifer Blankenship and Gabe Rivera, birders and wildlife photographers who give educational bird talks around the region. Jennifer is a licensed therapist who runs autism-focused therapy groups, and Gabe is a biology professor. Between them they have the experience to build a genuinely low-demand group, and the bird knowledge to make it worth showing up for.

No birding experience needed. Binoculars provided.

If you identify as autistic, you belong here.
